「草台班」自2005年春初創，由趙川主持活動及創作。十多年來「草台班」在其特立獨行的社會和藝術實踐中，積累出自己獨特的劇場觀念和美學。「草台班」同仁激勵普通人投身劇場和創作，強調問題意識、以及戲劇與周圍生活的關聯。他們多年來不拘一格地利用各種場地，進行非牟利的排演、討論，他們的劇場成為了不同人群參與的民間聚會場所，不斷塑造出流動的公共空間。
Grass Stage was founded in Shanghai in 2005, with Zhao Chuan as its mastermind. It has since gained popularity and has made an impact on the theatre scene. Grass Stage works in the basic concept of "poor theatre", using a diverse set of techniques, engendering spaces for intellectual exchange. Grass Stage also makes use of a wide range of venues and situations for performances and discussions. These spaces not only bring together diverse elements of society, but also provide, in a country relatively lacking in opportunities for public participation, a fluid and varied range of public social spaces.
